Sodus School District # 4 history sheet. From the personal research of cobblestone historian Karen Crandall.

Editor's Note: The history sheet states the schoolhouse location as "NE West Main St. at Belden Ave.". Today that is correct; however, Belden Ave. did not exist until 1875, when the schoolhouse was razed to provide the space to connect Belden Ave. to West Main St. The 1874 Atlas map excerpt below shows the location of the schoolhouse in relation to Belden Avenue. Cobblestone historian Karen Crandall writes in a 9/30/2022 email to the Cobblestone Info Base editor:

"The 1874 atlas depicts something (ie Belden Ave) that almost looks like a towpath intersecting at Main St. Strangely, to the west of the M.E. Church it looks like the schoolhouse is actually sitting in a part of what would later become the southern end of Belden Ave itself. North of the schoolhouse Belden Ave appears to be the same width as the other area roads. In researching this oddity, there is a lot of interesting stuff about the rapid development north of the center of village, especially when railroads came through. So that I can keep focus on the cobblestone building itself, I do not include such details. Nonetheless, in 1875 they tore this schoolhouse down so that they could widen Belden Ave. to conform with the other roads.

One part of the 10/7/1876 Wayne County Alliance article I cited said: "Struck by the last annual school meeting in one square, solid blow, it passed away, and fifty years hence the curious antiquarian inquiring for the site will find it as the opening to the then beautifully shaded Belden Avenue and the handsome grounds of the Methodist church, adorned with the elegant structure the church will have erected long before that."
